The coast is best experienced slowly, working your way north or south between the trading towns. The towns themselves — Bagamoyo, Tanga, and the Kilwa archipelago — have the architectural and historical interest; the islands of Mafia and Pemba have the diving and the quiet beaches; Saadani National Park gives a rare chance to see large mammals against an Indian Ocean backdrop.
