The Port of Tanga is the second-largest port in Tanzania after Dar es Salaam, and the historic engine of the town. It was the principal sisal-exporting harbour during the German and British colonial periods — for decades sisal from the surrounding plantations was the foundation of Tanga's economy — and the long ranks of warehouses and the deepwater pier still dominate the northern waterfront.
You cannot walk into the port itself, but the road skirts it and the view from the headland by the yacht club gives a good sense of the scale. The harbour traffic now is mostly fishing dhows and coastal cargo: the bigger international shipping moved south to Dar long ago.
