Kairouan's old medina is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and compact enough to explore on foot. The major monuments — the Great Mosque, the Mosque of the Three Doors, the Aghlabid Basins, and the Zaouia of Sidi Sahab — can all be visited in a day, but the medina's atmosphere rewards a slower pace. The backstreets between monuments are full of carpet workshops and small artisan shops.
