Day Trips in Entebbe

Entebbe sits right on the shore of Lake Victoria, so the best excursions head out onto the water. The standout is the Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary, about an hour by boat to the southeast, where some fifty orphaned and rescued chimpanzees live on a forested island and emerge for timed feeding sessions. Book ahead and pick a half-day, full-day, or overnight trip; the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre in town can help with arrangements.

Closer to home, the town's own attractions make for an easy day out in their own right. The Uganda Wildlife Education Centre keeps more than 200 local and rescued animals across spacious enclosures, with a forest walk and a medicinal-herb garden, while the Entebbe Botanical Gardens — laid out in 1901 on the lakeshore — are a fine introduction to Ugandan birdlife among old shade trees and a guided spider walk.

Kampala, the capital, is only about 45 minutes up the road and makes an easy half-day or full-day trip if you want the bustle of a big city to balance Entebbe's lakeside calm.
