Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage is one of the most remarkable conservation projects in Africa, home to over 120 chimpanzees rescued from illegal trade and habitat destruction. It lies about 80km northwest of Kitwe along the Chingola road, making it a feasible day trip from the city. The sanctuary operates large forested enclosures where the chimps live in social groups — the setting is more naturalistic than a zoo, and the experience of watching the groups is genuinely moving.
The orphanage accepts visitors and offers guided tours. Booking in advance is advisable. This is not a typical tourist attraction and the experience has the slightly rough-edged quality of a working wildlife facility, which is part of its appeal. The drive from Kitwe through the Copperbelt farmland and miombo woodland is itself pleasant.
