Mindolo Dam

Reservoir southwest of the city centre with boating, swimming and birdwatching

Mindolo Dam is a reservoir about seven kilometres southwest of the city centre, and the nearest thing Kitwe has to a recreational green space. The dam area has a boating club, a swimming pool, a bar, and space for picnics. On weekends it draws Kitwe residents looking to get out of the urban landscape for a few hours. The birdwatching around the dam and its fringing vegetation is reasonable — various waders, kingfishers, and open-country raptors are regularly seen.

It is a modest destination by the standards of Zambia's national parks, but as an antidote to Kitwe's industrial character it does the job. The drive out from the city also passes through residential areas that give a sense of how the city is structured around the various mine compounds.
