Lusaka's central location in Zambia makes it a practical base for longer excursions. The most popular day trip -- really a two-day trip -- is to Victoria Falls in Livingstone, about six hours south by road.
The Zambia Agricultural Show, held at the Agricultural Society Grounds, brings together farmers and manufacturers from around the country. Beyond the commercial exhibits there's a music festival that draws big crowds, with kalinduka -- a pounding, electric-guitar-driven style that developed in Zambia during the 1980s -- alongside R&B, reggae, rap, and traditional folk dancing from local tribes.
For a scenic two-day trip, head south from Lusaka to Livingstone and the Zambezi Sun Hotel. After settling in, spend the next morning on a guided tour of Victoria Falls, then take an afternoon cruise on the African Queen boat.
