Freedom Statue

Standing on Independence Avenue near the government ministries, the Freedom Statue is Lusaka's most visible independence monument. A bronze figure raises one fist to the sky while breaking free of chains at its feet — an image that has become the symbol of Zambian independence and appears on banknotes and official documents.

The statue stands at the intersection of two of the city's main arteries and is visible from the road, though you can walk up close to examine the detail of the casting. The surrounding area is administrative and fairly quiet during the day, with government buildings on all sides. It's most worth visiting if you're already walking Independence Avenue between the city centre and the government quarter.

A story
The bronze figure depicts an ordinary Zambian man breaking his chains — deliberately not a political leader or historical figure, but an anonymous person representing the entire nation. The sculptor, Sunday Chilufya Jack, chose this approach to emphasise that independence was won collectively, not by any individual. It was unveiled on independence day, 24 October 1964.
