Munda Wanga Environmental Park

About 15 kilometres south of the city centre, Munda Wanga combines a small zoo, botanical gardens, and the Monkey Pools — a series of natural rock pools along the Kafue tributary that are popular with local families on weekends. The zoo is modest by international standards but is well-run and focused on rehabilitation of injured Zambian wildlife. Vervet monkeys, crocodiles, zebras, and various antelope species are among the residents.

The botanical gardens are the main draw for visitors without children: well-maintained paths through stands of indigenous trees, flowering shrubs, and water gardens make it a genuinely peaceful place to spend a morning. There is a small cafe on site. Admission is charged separately for the zoo and gardens.

A story
Munda Wanga means "in the garden" in Nyanja, and the grounds were originally developed as a private estate in the colonial period before being converted to a public park after independence. The botanical gardens still carry some of that estate character — mature trees and formal plantings that feel quite different from the scrubby bush surrounding most of Lusaka.
