Nyamandhlovu Pan

Famous pumped waterhole near Main Camp with a raised viewing platform and reliable dry-season wildlife.

Nyamandhlovu Pan is one of Hwange's classic wildlife stops, close enough to Main Camp for an easy morning or late-afternoon drive. A raised viewing platform overlooks the waterhole, giving a safe, patient way to watch animals come and go without edging the vehicle closer every few minutes.

In the late dry season, elephants dominate the scene. Herds arrive in waves, drink, dust themselves, jostle around the water, and move off into the teak woodland. Giraffe, zebra, impala, kudu, and baboons are regular, and predators patrol the area when prey numbers build. Bring binoculars and stay longer than your first instinct; the waterhole changes by the minute.

A story
Hwange's waterholes are partly natural and partly maintained by pumps, a system that began under early park wardens trying to keep wildlife inside a dry landscape. The pumps remain controversial but essential: without them, many animals would move out of the park during drought years, often into conflict with people and livestock.
