Bahrain Fort (Qal'at al-Bahrain)

UNESCO-listed fort built by the Portuguese over 4,000-year-old Dilmun ruins

Qal'at al-Bahrain, the tell at which the Dilmun civilisation was rediscovered, has been continuously occupied since around 2300 BC. The present fort was built by the Portuguese in the 16th century on top of layers of earlier settlements; excavations have exposed sections at multiple levels. Now a UNESCO World Heritage site, with an excellent modern museum beside it explaining the archaeology. Sunset from the ramparts, looking out to sea, is the time to come.
