Lalakhal

A long, slow boat ride up the Sari River from a put-in north of Sylhet, Lalakhal is best in the cool months when the water is at its bluest. The boat passes tea estates, fishing villages, and the riverside customs post that marks the Indian border, with the Khasi Hills standing up on one side and flat Bangladesh on the other.

The boat ride typically lasts a couple of hours and ends at a small village beach where you can wade in the water. The trip is much more about the journey than any single destination. Boats can be hired at the Sari River put-in; tour operators in Sylhet can arrange a full day trip with transport.

A story
The waters of the Sari River change colour at Lalakhal as they spread out across the flat Sylheti plain: deep blue-green in the dry months, almost turquoise in places, before turning a muddy ochre in the monsoon. The colour comes from the limestone bed and the high silica content of the sand washed down from the Indian hills.
