Things to Do

Sylhet's reputation as a religious centre rests on the shrine of Shah Jalal, the 14th-century Sufi saint who brought Islam to the region; pilgrims still come from across South Asia. Beyond the shrine and the city centre's colonial-era landmarks, the surrounding hills and rivers carry most of the attractions: tea estates, the swamp forests of Ratargul, the haors (seasonal wetlands), and the stone-strewn rivers along the Indian border.
