Srimangal tea estates

Srimangal is the centre of the Bangladesh tea industry and the easiest place to actually walk through tea estates and visit a working factory. The countryside around the town is some of the most beautiful in Bangladesh: rolling green plantations, scattered villages of Khasi and Manipuri tribal people, and lush rainforest reserves.

Most visitors base themselves in Srimangal town for two or three nights and explore the surrounding estates, Lawachara National Park (for hoolock gibbons), and a couple of the resorts that have grown up along the road from Sylhet. Trains from Sylhet take about two hours and pass through some of the prettiest sections of the line.

A story
Srimangal is sometimes called the "tea capital" of Bangladesh — 80 km south of Sylhet on the road and rail line to Dhaka, and home to dozens of tea estates, including the country's first one (Malnicherra), established in 1854. The town's most famous café serves a seven-layer tea, each stratum a different brew of black, milk, and spiced varieties poured carefully so they don't mix.
