Eating out in Jakar is limited and mostly oriented to tour groups. Most travellers eat at their hotel or guesthouse, which is where the best Bhutanese cooking is found.
The town has a handful of small Bhutanese-Indian restaurants along the main street serving ema datshi (chillies and cheese), kewa datshi (potato and cheese), red rice, and momos. Look out for local Bumthang specialities: buckwheat noodles (puta) and buckwheat pancakes (khuli), often served with cheese or yak butter, plus apple juice and apple wine made in the valley.
The Swiss Farm and Cheese Factory, founded in the 1960s by a Swiss settler, sells gouda, emmental, apple juice, honey, and the local arra liquor — worth a stop on the road south of town.
