Getting There

Jakar is in central Bhutan and reaching it is part of the experience. The road from Thimphu and Paro is around 270 km but takes 9 to 11 hours by car: it crosses three high passes — Dochu La, Pele La, and Yotong La — and progress is slow on the narrow, winding mountain roads. Most travellers break the journey overnight at Trongsa or Wangdi.

A much faster alternative is the small domestic airport at Bathpalathang, just outside Jakar, served by Drukair and Bhutan Airlines from Paro. The flight is only 30 minutes and the runway sits dramatically in the valley floor — note that flights are limited and cancellations due to weather are common, so allow flexibility in your schedule.

All travel within Bhutan must be arranged through a licensed tour operator, who will provide the vehicle, driver, and guide as part of your daily fee.
