Petseling Monastery sits on a wooded hillside north-east of Jakar, about a 30 to 40 minute hike up from the valley floor along a track that climbs through pine and rhododendron. It is a small Nyingma monastery dating from the late 18th century and serves as a meditation retreat for monks.
The walk up is more rewarding than the monastery itself — the path runs through quiet forest, with occasional clearings looking out across the Bumthang valley. The complex on top is modest, with the standard arrangement of assembly hall, residences, and a few rolling chortens, but its quietness and the views make it a satisfying half-day outing from town.
