The Teuk Chhou rapids are a popular Sunday destination for Cambodian families from Kampot and beyond — a stretch of fast water with rocky banks, riverside restaurants on stilts, and swimming spots. The journey from Kampot takes about 20 minutes by bike or motorbike on a reasonable road through rice fields.
The rapids are modest by international standards but the setting is pleasant: the river coming out of the Cardamom mountain foothills, lined with bamboo and tropical trees, with local families cooking on gas burners on the rocks and children swimming in the shallower side channels. It feels genuinely local in a way that the riverfront tourist strip in town doesn't. The restaurants serve fresh fish from the river and the usual Khmer staples. Go on a weekday if you want quiet; weekends bring crowds.
