Huagudeng Folk Performance

Huagudeng — literally "flower drum lantern" — is a form of folk performance originating in the Huaihe valley and recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage. The form combines dance, acrobatic elements, and singing derived from the Sizhou opera tradition, performed in elaborate embroidered costumes. Bengbu is considered its home.

Performances are staged occasionally at the Bengbu Grand Theater and regularly during the Huagudeng Festival, typically held in spring. The style is energetic and visually spectacular — quite different from the more formal traditions of Peking or Kunqu opera, with an emphasis on physical movement and crowd interaction. Asking at the tourist information center or checking local event listings will tell you when the next performance is scheduled.
