Long Lake Scenic Area

Long Lake is Bengbu's most rewarding natural attraction, a sizeable expanse of water on the city's northern edge where lotus beds dominate from late spring through summer. The lotus blooms peak in June and July, when the lake becomes genuinely beautiful — flat pink and white flowers extending to the horizon, with the city skyline visible beyond. Boat rentals are available, and the lakeside paths are popular for cycling.

The surrounding wetlands attract migratory waterbirds in spring and autumn, making this a worthwhile stop for anyone interested in birding. The small island pavilions connected by bridges are pleasant for a wander. The lake is most rewarding in early morning before the day-trippers arrive, or in the hour before sunset when the light is good on the water.

A story
Long Lake — Changhu — sits on the northern edge of Bengbu and was historically a natural flood-retention basin for the Huaihe River. The reed beds that fringe its banks have been nesting grounds for egrets and cormorants for as long as anyone can remember, and early-morning birders can count dozens of species on a good day in spring.
