When to Go

Hefei has a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons. Spring (March to May) is the most pleasant time to visit — mild temperatures, cherry blossoms in the parks, and lotus appearing on the lakes from late May. Autumn (September to November) is the other good window, with clear skies and moderate temperatures.

Summer (June to August) is hot and humid, with temperatures regularly exceeding 35°C. The crayfish season peaks in summer, which draws visitors to the food streets, but the heat makes sightseeing uncomfortable. Winter (December to February) is cold and damp by Chinese standards — temperatures drop below freezing regularly, and the city's buildings are not always well-heated. The winter months are quiet and prices are lower.

The Golden Week holidays in early May and early October bring significant crowds to attractions and push up accommodation prices; booking ahead is advisable for those periods.
