When to Go

Jiuhua Mountain is busiest during the Dizang Festival in the seventh lunar month (usually August or early September), when pilgrim numbers spike dramatically and accommodation is very hard to find without advance booking. The period around Qingming Festival in April is also busy, as pilgrims come to honor deceased family members.

The most atmospheric times to visit are late autumn (October to November), when the maples color against the monastery walls, and early spring (March to April), when the mountain emerges from winter quiet and the first flowers appear on the lower slopes. Winter visits are possible and occasionally beautiful — snow on the rooftops and empty paths — but the cold is serious and some facilities may be limited.

Summer (June to August) is warm and sometimes misty, which adds atmosphere but can close views. Weekdays are dramatically less crowded than weekends throughout the year; the combination of a Tuesday or Wednesday visit and an early start makes an enormous difference to the experience.
