Sanduao

Sanduao is a natural deep-water bay in southern Ningde prefecture, ringed by islands and famous for its oyster and abalone aquaculture. The bay produces some of the best shellfish in Fujian, and the seafood restaurants in Sanduao town serve oysters, clams, and large yellow croaker (a prized fish in Chinese coastal cuisine) at prices considerably lower than in the coastal cities. The bay itself is scenic, with boat trips available around the aquaculture rafts and smaller islands.

The Sanduao area also contains several fishing villages on islands accessible by small ferry, most of which receive few tourists despite being within easy reach of Ningde. The village on Qingyudao Island has retained a traditional appearance, with stone houses and boat landings, that is increasingly rare along the developed Fujian coast. Sanduao is about 40 minutes by bus from Ningde city.

A story
Sanduao's protected deep-water harbor, sheltered by islands and surrounded by hills, was identified by foreign mariners as one of the finest anchorages on the China coast as early as the 19th century. The American journalist and adventurer Edgar Snow, before he became famous for his reportage on the Chinese Communist Party, passed through and described the harbor in remarkably similar terms. Today the same harbor that attracted traders for centuries is ringed with aquaculture farms — mussels, oysters, large yellow croaker, and abalone — making Sanduao one of China's most productive seafood regions.
