Baiyunshan

Baiyunshan is the most remote of Ningde's three major scenic areas, a landscape of granite gorges, waterfalls, and subtropical forest in the interior mountains near Zhouning County. The trails follow river valleys through increasingly narrow canyons, passing several waterfalls and emerging into She ethnic minority villages where the architecture and daily life give a sense of how this mountain country was lived before the coast industrialised. The She people here speak their own language among themselves and maintain textile and musical traditions distinct from coastal Fujian.

The scenic area is most accessible from Zhouning County town, itself famous among domestic tourists for a large waterfall visible from the town centre. The combination of Baiyunshan and Zhouning makes a sensible two-day inland excursion from Ningde city. Bus services from Ningde reach Zhouning in about two hours.

A story
The She people — a recognised ethnic minority of Fujian and Zhejiang — have lived in these mountains for centuries, maintaining a distinct language, embroidery tradition, and set of festivals that differ markedly from the Han majority. The Baiyunshan area has several She villages where the traditional way of life is most visible. The She marriage ceremony, involving days of antiphonal folk singing, is one of the most elaborate in the region and still performed at festivals in the spring.
