Linxia sits at around 1,800 metres elevation in a mountain valley, which keeps temperatures moderate in summer and cold in winter. The best seasons to visit are late spring (May–June) and early autumn (September–October), when the days are warm and clear and the mountain landscapes around the city are at their most appealing.
Friday is the most atmospheric day to visit — the weekly congregational prayer draws people from the surrounding countryside, the bazaars are at their busiest, and the city has a particular energy. Ramadan adds another dimension if you happen to be there during the Islamic holy month — the pre-dawn and iftar meals are community events, and the atmosphere in the mosques during evening prayers is memorable. Be aware that some food stalls may have reduced hours during the day.
