Zhangye City Museum

The Zhangye City Museum covers the history of the Hexi Corridor — the narrow strip of habitable land that carried the Silk Road through Gansu for two millennia — with a mix of Han-dynasty artefacts, Tang Buddhist objects, and Western Xia ceramics. The collection is not enormous but it is well-focused: the Hexi Corridor was one of the most historically significant bottlenecks in Asian history, and the museum makes that significance legible.

The ground floor covers the early Silk Road period, including bronze objects from Han-dynasty garrison life and examples of the wooden tablets that carried official correspondence along the route. The upper floors cover the Western Xia kingdom and the Mongol period, when Zhangye was known as Ganzhou and was an important administrative centre. Free entry; closed Mondays.
