Zhangye is a useful base rather than a destination in itself, but it has two genuinely worthwhile sights: the Dafo Temple with its enormous reclining Buddha, and the Mati Si cliff grottoes south of the city. The Danxia Geological Park forty kilometres west is the main reason most travellers stop here.
