Renshou Temple

Renshou Temple (仁寿寺) is an active Buddhist monastery in the old city district, quieter and less visited than the Zumiao complex a short walk away. Founded during the Tang dynasty and rebuilt many times since, the current buildings are Qing-period but the site's religious continuity stretches back over a thousand years. The main hall contains a large carved wooden altar and is fragrant with incense from the morning and evening prayer sessions.

The monastery's gardens in the rear courtyard are well-maintained and provide a calm contrast to the busier streets outside. On the first and fifteenth of the lunar month, the temple attracts large numbers of local Buddhist worshippers and the courtyards fill with incense smoke and chanted sutras.
