Wong Fei-hung Memorial Hall

The Wong Fei-hung Memorial Hall is part of the Zumiao complex, a short walk from the Ancestral Temple's main hall. It documents the life and legacy of Foshan's most famous son through photographs, artefacts, and displays on the development of Hung Gar kung fu, the style Wong Fei-hung practised and taught. The hall is thoughtful about distinguishing between documented history and later mythology — a distinction the cinema has largely collapsed.

The nearby Ip Man museum is dedicated to the Wing Chun master who taught Bruce Lee, and covers a different branch of Foshan's martial arts heritage. Ip Man was from Foshan and began his Wing Chun training here before moving to Hong Kong in 1949, where he opened the school that eventually produced one of the most influential martial arts lineages in the world.

A story
Wong Fei-hung (1847–1924) was a martial artist, folk hero, and traditional Chinese medicine practitioner whose legend has been adapted into over a hundred films — more than any other historical figure in Chinese cinema. The actual historical Wong Fei-hung was a skilled physician in Guangzhou who was also known for his martial arts school; the heroic folk avenger of the movies is almost entirely a later construction. The memorial in Foshan focuses on the real person, which is in some ways more interesting than the legend.
