Jianying Memorial Bridge

The Jianying Memorial Bridge spans the Mei River in central Meizhou, a graceful arc that frames a view of the old city's riverside buildings and the forested hills beyond. Built to honour Marshal Ye Jianying, the bridge is now a pleasant promenade and photography spot rather than a primary transport artery. The combination of the river, the bridge, and the skyline is the most photogenic composition in the city.

The riverside walk along the Mei River north and south of the bridge is pleasant in the cooler months, lined with trees and benches and generally quiet. The old town area on the west bank, behind the bridge approach, has the city's most intact older streetscape.

A story
The bridge is named for Ye Jianying, one of the founding marshals of the People's Republic of China, who was born in Meizhou and remained the city's most famous native son until the opening of the reform era. Ye played a crucial role in the arrest of the Gang of Four in October 1976, acting in coordination with Hua Guofeng to end the Cultural Revolution's most destructive phase. He was subsequently rehabilitated and remains a revered figure in Meizhou, where his birthplace is preserved as a museum.
