Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge

The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, opened in 2018, is the longest sea-crossing bridge-tunnel system in the world at 55 kilometres. Driving or taking a shuttle bus across the bridge is itself an experience: the Pearl River Estuary spreads out in every direction, with Lantau Island and the Hong Kong airport visible to the east and the Zhuhai coast behind. The bridge includes a tunnel section beneath a shipping channel, creating a technical feat that required years of construction and engineering work on a scale matched by very few infrastructure projects.

The bridge is accessible from the Zhuhai port terminal on the eastern edge of the city. Cross-boundary coaches run between the Zhuhai port and the Hong Kong Airport shuttle bus, making the bridge a practical connection rather than just a tourist experience. The most photogenic approach is by shuttle bus from Macau: the road rises onto the bridge viaduct at an angle that gives clear views down both sides of the structure simultaneously.

A story
When it opened in 2018, the 55-kilometre bridge-tunnel was the longest sea crossing ever built. The design includes a central tunnel section beneath a shipping lane — the surface section alone is 29 kilometres long. In its first year of operation, it connected Zhuhai directly to Hong Kong for the first time, reducing a four-hour ferry journey to a 40-minute bus ride.
