Qianming Temple

Qianming Temple, in the Nanming District near the Jiaxiu Pavilion area, is one of Guiyang's oldest Buddhist foundations, with origins in the Ming dynasty. The current buildings are Qing and post-1990s restorations, but the layout of the complex — multiple courtyards, incense halls, and a distinctive pagoda — retains the traditional scale of a significant urban temple. It is quieter than Hongfu Temple in Qianlingshan Park and more centrally located, making it a practical addition to any walk around the Jiaxiu Pavilion neighbourhood.

The temple is active and visited primarily by local worshippers rather than tourists. Morning and evening prayer sessions are conducted by resident monks. The pagoda at the rear of the complex is the oldest surviving structure, recently repaired but retaining its original brick form. Entry is a few yuan.

A story
The Qianming Temple complex in central Guiyang was active from the Ming dynasty through the Republic, then closed and converted to other uses after 1949. It was restored in the 1990s and is now functioning again as a Buddhist temple. The complex is unusually large for a city-centre temple in southwest China — several courtyard halls, a pagoda, and a substantial incense hall — and it draws worshippers from across the city on major Buddhist festival days.
