When to Go

Baoding's best seasons are spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October), when the North China climate is at its most pleasant — warm, relatively dry, and clear. Summer brings heat and humidity, and the occasional flash flood can affect rural roads around the Western Qing Tombs. Winter is cold and can be grey for weeks at a time, though the tomb complex looks striking under snow and visitor numbers drop considerably.

Baiyang Lake is at its best for lotus viewing in July and August, which is also the hottest period. Bird-watching at the lake is most rewarding in October and November during the autumn migration.
