Anyuan Temple

Small Mongolian-style temple east of the Mountain Resort

Anyuan Temple (安远庙) is one of the smaller and least visited of the Eight Outer Temples, which is why it is worth seeking out. Qianlong built it in 1764 in the style of the Gurja Temple in northern Xinjiang, partly as a gesture to relocated Dzungar Mongol communities. The reduced scale, the mossy courtyards, and the absence of tour groups make it one of the more meditative spots in Chengde.

Most visitors who do stop here pair it with the much larger Pule Temple a few hundred metres south, since the two sit in the same quiet eastern district near the foot of Sledgehammer Peak. Best in the late afternoon.
