Chengde's main draw is imperial-era architecture on a grand scale. The Mountain Resort alone could fill a full day; add the Putuo Zongcheng, Puning, Xumi Fushou, and Pule temples and you have two days of serious sightseeing. The smaller outer temples — Anyuan and Shuxiang — are worth seeking out for their quieter atmosphere. The rock formation at Sledgehammer Peak makes a satisfying half-day trip out of the city centre for the views back over the valley.
