Shuxiang Temple

Hillside temple dedicated to Manjushri, north of the Mountain Resort

Shuxiang Temple (殊像寺) was built in 1774 as a Han-Chinese-style temple dedicated to Manjushri, the bodhisattva of wisdom. The Qianlong Emperor identified personally with Manjushri — Chinese imperial propaganda routinely referred to him as a manifestation of the bodhisattva — and the temple was a private rather than diplomatic project.

It is one of the quieter outer temples, terraced up a wooded hillside north of the Mountain Resort and easily combined with a visit to the more dramatic Putuo Zongcheng next door. The walk up between cypresses is the main appeal; the inner halls are modest in scale.
