Getting Around

Luoyang has a small metro system with two operational lines, useful for getting between the main train stations and the city centre. Most of the tourist sites are not directly on the metro, so taxis or ride-hailing apps (Didi) fill the gaps. Taxis are cheap by Western standards and readily available in the city centre.

The Longmen Grottoes are about 13 kilometres south of the centre; a taxi takes 25 minutes and costs around 30 yuan. The White Horse Temple is 12 kilometres east; again a taxi is the easiest option. For multiple sites in a single day, hiring a taxi for a half-day circuit is common and reasonable — negotiate a price in advance with the driver or use Didi with its fixed pricing.

Bus number 71 connects the city centre with the Longmen Grottoes area. The journey takes about 40 minutes and passes near Guanlin Temple.
