Tsang Tai Uk

Well-preserved 1840s Hakka walled village in Sha Tin

A 19th-century walled village built in the 1840s for the Tsang clan, whose patriarch made his fortune from quarrying. The grey-brick compound is rectangular, with three iron-bound gates, granite walls, and five courtyards centred on an ancestral hall. Two wells in the front courtyard still provide water for the small number of Tsang descendants who continue to live here. The roof decorations — intended to ward off evil spirits — are among the most elaborate surviving examples in the territory.

It's a genuinely impressive piece of traditional Hakka architecture, better preserved and less touristed than the better-known Kat Hing Wai in Kam Tin. Take the MTR to Che Kung Temple station; the village is a short walk from the exit.
