Huangshi Museum

The Huangshi Museum, in the city centre, covers the regional history of southeastern Hubei from prehistoric times through the twentieth century. The archaeological collection includes bronzes and ceramics from the Shang, Zhou, and Han periods, with a particular emphasis on the metallurgical culture that makes this region distinctive in Chinese archaeology — the proximity to Tonglushan and the Daye copper mines means the museum has genuine depth in this area.

Admission is free, as is standard for Chinese public museums at this level. The galleries are air-conditioned, making it a comfortable stop in the humid Yangtze valley summers. Plan an hour; the building is modern and the layout is easy to navigate. The museum is a useful orientation before visiting the mine park or Tonglushan archaeological site.
