Yangtze Riverfront (Huangshigang)

The Huangshigang riverfront park runs along the south bank of the Yangtze in the western part of the city, where Huangshi meets the river. It is a pleasant place to watch the river traffic — bulk carriers heading upriver toward Wuhan and Yichang, container barges moving downstream, and the occasional passenger vessel. The park has been landscaped in the manner of Chinese urban riverfronts, with paved walkways, pavilions, and planted areas, and it comes alive with local residents in the early morning and evening.

The Yangtze at Huangshigang is still obviously a working river rather than a scenic amenity, and that industrial quality is part of what makes it interesting. The view downstream toward the industrial zones of the eastern city is an honest picture of what Huangshi actually is — a river port built on mineral wealth rather than tourism.
