Taoist Martial Arts Schools

The Wudang Mountains are the acknowledged birthplace of the internal martial arts — Tai Chi (Taijiquan), Baguazhang, and Xingyiquan — and a number of Taoist martial arts schools operate here that accept short-term students. Week-long and month-long residential programmes are available at several of the schools based in Wudangshan town at the base of the mountain, combining daily martial arts instruction with optional Taoist meditation and qigong practice.

The standard of instruction varies, and it is worth researching specific schools before arriving. The most established schools have international student programmes with English-speaking staff; others operate entirely in Mandarin. Expect to wake early (most programmes begin at dawn with outdoor practice), to train several hours daily, and to engage seriously with the practice rather than treating it as a tourist experience. The mountain environment — cool air, forest paths, ancient temples — provides exactly the context in which these arts were developed.

A story
Zhang Sanfeng, the semi-legendary Song dynasty hermit credited with creating Tai Chi, is said to have conceived the soft internal style after watching a fight between a crane and a snake — the crane's rigid force unable to overcome the snake's yielding flexibility. Whether or not the story is historically accurate, it captures the essential principle of internal martial arts: yield and redirect rather than meet force with force.
