Baotong Temple

Baotong Temple is the oldest Buddhist temple in Wuhan, founded in the Southern Song dynasty (12th century) on the southern slope of Hong Shan. The temple is laid out up the hillside on a series of terraces, climbing to a seven-storey pagoda at the top from which the view stretches across to the Yangtze.

The complex is less famous than Guiyuan Temple and consequently quieter — a working monastery where you can sometimes catch the monks in chant or the morning hours of incense. The Hong Shan Pagoda, an Yuan dynasty structure rebuilt several times, dominates the skyline of inner Wuchang. Free admission; allow an hour and a half.
