The mountains of central China are within easy day-trip range of Wuhan by high-speed rail. Wudang Shan, the spiritual heart of Daoism and home to a UNESCO-listed temple complex, is about 4 hours by train. Closer to the city, Mulan Tianchi (Heavenly Lake) and Mulan Mountain to the north make a pleasant escape for hikes and lakeside walks. The classic longer trip from Wuhan is upstream along the Yangtze — a 3- to 4-day cruise to Chongqing via the Three Gorges.
