Tanhualin Cafes

Tanhualin, the steep narrow old street running across Wuchang's missionary quarter, has become Wuhan's cafe district in recent years. Independent coffee shops are scattered along its length, often built into the stone-fronted houses left by 19th-century missionaries. The crowd is creative and young, the prices are higher than at the chains, and the coffee is mostly very good.

Look for Cafe Hello on the eastern end of the street, the deliberately minimalist Atelier Coffee in the middle, and a string of newer openings on the lanes off the main street. Most cafes also sell pastries and small-batch tea. Good for a coffee break between sights or a quiet afternoon working.
