The main hall of Guiyuan Temple and its spiritual centrepiece. Inside stands a statue of Sakyamuni, the founder of Buddhism, flanked by two of his ten principal disciples: Mahakasyapa on the right, regarded as the first patriarch who carried on Sakyamuni's teaching after his death, and Ananda on the left, known for his prodigious memory and credited with compiling the Buddhist sutras.
The hall dates from the early Republic of China period, part of the temple's reconstruction after centuries of cycles of destruction and renewal. It's typically busy with worshippers burning incense and making offerings, especially during Buddhist festivals.
