Hubu Alley

Hubu Alley is the most famous food street in Wuhan — a narrow lane in Wuchang, between the Yellow Crane Tower and the river, lined end to end with stalls selling the city's traditional breakfast snacks. The fame of Hubu Alley has made it touristy and busy, especially on weekends, but the food is still good and the variety is unbeatable.

Look for re gan mian (hot dry noodles, the local breakfast classic), bean curd puffs, glutinous rice balls, mian wo (savoury rice cakes), and lotus root soup. Most stalls take cash or mobile payment and serve small portions; the standard play is to walk the alley once, choose three or four stalls, and combine breakfast from them. Mornings are the busiest time, which is also when the food is freshest.
