Sutra Collection Pavilion

Qing-dynasty pavilion in Guiyuan Temple housing 7,000 Buddhist sutras and a white jade Buddha

The Sutra Collection Pavilion sits within Guiyuan Temple (归元寺) in Wuhan's Hanyang district, one of the best-preserved Buddhist temple complexes in central China. The pavilion was built in 1696 during the reign of the Kangxi Emperor and serves as the temple's repository for sacred texts — over 7,000 Buddhist sutras, including rare manuscripts from Japan, India, Burma, and Thailand.

The centrepiece is a Sakyamuni statue carved from a single block of white jade, serene in the dim interior. Guiyuan Temple is most famous for its Hall of 500 Arhats, but the Sutra Collection Pavilion is quieter and worth the extra few minutes.

Getting there: Guiyuan Temple is in Hanyang, about 20 minutes by metro from Hankou station. Take Line 6 to Guiyuansi station.
