Tanhualin

Tanhualin is a narrow, hilly old street in Wuchang lined with late-19th-century missionary churches, schools, and consulates, gradually reinvented in the last decade as Wuhan's cafe-and-bookshop neighbourhood. The British, American, and Swedish missionaries who came to Wuchang in the 1890s built solid stone houses here, several of which still stand.

Today the street is dotted with independent coffee shops, vintage clothing stalls, and small art galleries, with the old St Joseph's Hospital and the Wenhua University buildings as anchors. It is the kind of place you walk slowly with a coffee and stop in a few shops along the way — a different Wuhan from the broad avenues of Hankou.
