The Wuchang Uprising Memorial Museum, housed in the red-brick Hubei Military Government Building (the Hong Lou or Red House), commemorates the events of 10 October 1911 — the soldiers' mutiny in Wuchang that triggered the collapse of the Qing dynasty and the founding of the Republic of China. The building itself was the headquarters of the New Army units that started the uprising and later the seat of the provisional revolutionary government.
The exhibits are large, mostly in Chinese, and cover the lead-up to the uprising, the rise of Sun Yat-sen, and the early years of the Republic. The well-tended gardens and grand red brickwork of the building make it worth a visit even for those who skim the displays. Free; closed Mondays.
