Xiangyang's great advantage over most Chinese historical cities is that the main attractions are free, substantial, and close together. The ancient walls and the Gulongzhong scenic area between them account for a full day; the museum fills a useful half-day; the Fancheng side of the river adds evening street food and a different atmosphere. This is a city where you actually walk and look, rather than buying tickets to see reconstructed heritage.
